I was very fortunate to be able to spend 2 months in Europe getting an insight into European racing. For some athletes, they can master what success means to them and what it looks like faster than others. The biggest thing I learnt is that nothing happens overnight and that mindset is very important.

3 of the learnings that I took away from Europe were:

Positioning and skills. This is crucial to being able to have a successful race. New Zealand does not represent what cycling is like in Europe. With women’s cycling in New Zealand being very different to Europe it can take some time to adjust. I think it is important to find the style of races you enjoy and want to race hard in. Put your focus into small achievements that come with succeeding your race goals. If there is a race you are targeting for in Europe and are looking for a result then it’s going to be valuable to have already done some Euro races so you know what you’re in for. You will need to be confident with your skills and how you choose to position.

Good environment. Living in Europe is the best opportunity for anyone and for a cyclist what we dream of. Make the most of having the best environment that is within your control. Find a region with hills and always take downtime to remember what your purpose is and as well just to have time to think. When living in Europe, remember why you are there and enjoy it. Create your own reality and be responsible for making the most of your opportunities.

Set up your home like how you live in New Zealand. Make it feel homely so after hard days out of the bike you can come home and have some downtime allowing you to recharge your batteries. Surround yourself around people who share the same purpose, but make the living conditions most suited to you. Always work on all the smaller things that are in your control as part of the preparation process. For me that is consistently working on hydrating, going to bed at a better time and mindset. For others, it may be foam rolling and nutrition, or what you want to achieve in the process before/post race.

In the coming years when I plan to return to Europe, I will have a greater purpose. The best reality check was going to Europe. Sometimes it is necessary to take a step back so you can understand and see the big picture, as now I know exactly what I need to do to go forward and how I will create my own success.
